The My First Greens blend is best grown in trays or beds of soil. It can take a while to grow, so we encourage you to get it growing ASAP!
Nesty Boxes recommends using two shallow trays, drilling one with holes and adding soil then placing it into the other to catch drainage. Sow the seed 10mm below the surface and water to keep moist. Graze when the Pasture reaches 15 to 20cm in
height and aim to leave at least 5cm to ensure regrowth.

What is the benefit of sowing or sprouting vegetative seeds for my chicks?

By growing crops specifically for your chicks, you can improve their nutrition and provides enrichment and stimulation. The combination of legumes will offer a valuable source of vitamins and minerals and protein. Sowing or sprouting seed blends last far longer than purchasing vegetables or greens for your chicks and will reduce their consumption in crumbles whilst grazing the vegetation.

How do I know when my seed blend is ready to eat?

It is recommended to sow all the Nesty Sowing Seeds range in soil. If sowing the crop, the blend should be ready once it reaches 15 to 20cm in height with an established root system. Test by tugging a plant; if it uproots, the sown vegetation is not ready. Once you can tug on a plant and not have it uproot, it will be ready for its first grazing. Monitor carefully to ensure you do not over graze. If sprouting the crop, the blend should be ready in a minimum of 21 days. This is dependent on the growing conditions provided and could be ready sooner or later too. Allow for the blend to grow to 7cm to 20cm before harvesting. Once the legume blend reaches a desirable height, gently pull apart clumps and feed. Any leftovers may continue to grow or best composted.

How do I best manage my plants so they regrow back?

If sowing directly into soil: The key is to not “overgraze.” Ensure that the plants don’t get too trampled or eaten right down to the base. Shorter periods on the vegetation will enhance the lifespan of the blend. Watering is strongly encouraged to keep the plants fresh, lush, and palatable. If managed correctly with adequate water, nutrients and grazing management, the blend should last you months, if not years! If sprouting this blend, it will only last for 1 to 2 grazings before needing to be composted or thrown out.

Will this blend last all year round?

If sown in soil and given enough light, fertiliser, and water, this blend will be a long lasting option that has the potential to last multiple years if not overgrazed and correctly managed. If sprouted, this blend is only good for consumption once or twice before needing to be composted.

When is the best time to sow or sprout?

If you are thinking of sprouting this blend, we suggest trying the Nesty All Seasons Sowing Seeds instead. This blend contains a high percentage of cereals which will germinate quickly and make for a great sprouting blend. Most of our other blends are designed to be sown in soil. This can be in trays, planter boxes or directly in the ground. The optimum time to sow is when the temperature is warm but the soil is moist.

Can all poultry eat Nesty’s Poultry Porridge?

Yes, Nesty’s Poultry Porridge is safe for all poultry, including chickens, ducks, geese, and more. Even baby poultry, such as chicks, goslings, and ducklings, can enjoy any flavour from the range. Be sure to always add water to ensure easy consumption, as this feed is not suitable to be served dry.

Why should I feed my flock Poultry Porridge?

Feeding your flock a wet mash provides a nutritious, highly palatable meal that even the pickiest eaters will enjoy. It’s also a great way to increase their fluid intake on hot days while boosting productivity. Plus, it offers enrichment, giving your chickens a fun, engaging activity.

What makes Nesty’s Poultry Porridge the better choice?

Made with Australian grains and produced in South Australia, Nesty’s Poultry Porridge range is manufactured in a Feed Safe Accredited Feed Mill and offers nutritious, balanced mashes that your flock will love. With a variety of flavours and carefully selected ingredients tailored to poultry nutritional needs, there’s something for everyone. They are free from antibiotics, all-natural, and perfect at feeding the fussiest of feeders.

Can I feed Poultry Porridge dry or without water?

Whilst the Poultry Porridge (mash) range is designed to be mixed with water and served immediately. Feeding it dry is an option, working similar to a pecking pellet to provide long term stimulation. Always feed with caution and supervise hens if feeding dry, as it may cause chickens to choke or struggle with the large pellet size.

Can I use cold water instead of hot water to prepare the mash?

Yes, you can use warm, hot, or cold water. However, cold water will take longer for the porridge to soak and reach the desired consistency.

Can I feed other treats to my flock along with the Poultry Porridge?

Yes, but keep treats to no more than 10% of your flock’s diet. Always provide clean water and ensure pellets or a grain blend are available for ad-lib feeding.

      Love it!!!

The chicken mash (or porridge as I call it) is a hit with my baby chicks. They are 5 weeks old and they peeped with happiness while eating it! I’m currently growing the seeds - which has been easy to do. I used the plastic trays (the bases for cakes, meat etc) and put a few holes in them for drainage. Easy!!
