White Clover
Red Clover
Persian Clover
Sub Clover
Lucerne
This blend provides a soft, leafy forage that’s ideal for young poultry learning to graze. Each clover type offers a mild flavour and tender texture that’s easy for chicks to peck at, while lucerne adds a boost of natural protein and minerals to support early growth. The mix is also rich in nitrogen-fixing legumes, helping improve soil health (if grown rather than sprouted) while delivering a balanced, nutritious grazing experience for developing birds.
What is the benefit of sowing or sprouting vegetative seeds for my chicks?
By growing crops specifically for your chicks, you can improve their nutrition and provides enrichment and stimulation. The combination of legumes will offer a valuable source of vitamins and minerals and protein. Sowing or sprouting seed blends last far longer than purchasing vegetables or greens for your chicks and will reduce their consumption in crumbles whilst grazing the vegetation.
How do I know when my seed blend is ready for my chicks to eat?
If sowing the crop, the blend should be ready once it reaches 15 to 20cm in height with an established root system. Test by tugging a plant; if it uproots, the sown vegetation is not ready for your young stock to graze. Once you can tug on a plant and not have it uproot, it will be ready for its first grazing. Monitor carefully to ensure you do not over graze.
If sprouting the crop, the blend should be ready in a minimum of 21 days. This is dependant on the growing conditions provided and could be ready sooner or later too. Allow for the My First Greens blend to grow to a height of 10 to 20cm before harvesting for your chicks. Once the legume blend reaches a desirable height, gently pull apart clumps and feed to he chicks. Any leftovers can continue to grow or be composted.
How do I best manage my plants so they regrow back?
If sowing directly into soil: The key is to not “overgraze.” Ensure that the plants don’t get too trampled or eaten right down to the base. Shorter periods on the vegetation will enhance the lifespan of the blend. Watering is strongly encouraged to keep the plants fresh, lush, and palatable. If managed correctly with adequate water, nutrients and grazing management, the blend should last you months, if not years!
If sprouting this blend, it will only last for 1 to 2 grazings before needing to be composted or thrown out.
Can only baby chickens eat the greens?
Despite this blend being formulated specifically for young poultry including (but not limited to) chicks, goslings, ducklings, keets. However it is completely safe for all adult poultry. It can be a fantastic way to provide additional calories to your flock during periods of stress, recovery, or illness.
Will this blend last all year round?
If sown in soil and given enough light, fertiliser, and water, this blend will be a long lasting option that has the potential to last multiple years if not overgrazed and correctly managed. If sprouted, this blend is only good for consumption once or twice before needing to be composted.
What size area will 500g grow?
A 500g pouch will fit perfectly into a standard 40 x 30cm tray for sprouting. Although 100g in a smaller tray will grow plenty of greens for your poultry. The recommended sprouting instructions requires 100g of Nesty My First Greens soaked in 500ml of water. If sowing in the soil, sow 100g per metre squared, 10 millimetres below the surface.
When is the best time to sow or sprout Nesty My First Greens?
The Nesty My First Greens can be sown and sprouted at any time of the year. For best results in soil, sow in early autumn. This will require less water than when sown in warmer months. However, if you provide water to your mix, it will grow extremely well in warmer months. Provide a fertiliser rich in nitrogen and phosphorus.
