Sowing Instructions:

Using a rake, lightly scratch your soil surface, gently tilling the desired planting area. Use 100g per metre squared. Spread the seeds across the bed, ensuring the scratched soil surface will allow seeds to be sown 10 to 20mm below the surface. Rake over the soil to cover the seeds. Water and wait 4 to 10 weeks for the plants to establish. You may apply fertiliser in the third week post sowing to encourage plant growth. Remember to keep the chickens off of the planted area until it is ready for them to consume. If chickens uproot or destroy established plants it is unlikely they will return.

Sprouting Instructions:

How to Sprout Nesty Boxes Seed Blend for Your Poultry:
What You'll Need: 100g of Nesty Boxes Certified Seed Blend
500ml (2 cups) of clean water
A shallow tray with drainage holes (or a well-ventilated container)
A dark, warm space for initial germination
A well-lit area for growing.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Soak the Seeds:Add 100g of seeds to a bowl and cover them with 500ml of water.A llow the seeds to soak for 12 hours (overnight).
  2. Drain and Rinse:After soaking, drain the water and rinse the seeds thoroughly with fresh water. Spread the seeds evenly in a shallow tray with drainage holes to prevent excess moisture buildup.
  3. Initial Germination (Days 1-3):Place the tray in a dark, warm space (ideally 18-22°C) to encourage sprouting. Rinse and drain the seeds twice daily to prevent mould and ensure even hydration.
  4. Growing (Days 4-7):Once you see sprouting (usually within 3 days), move the tray to a well-lit area with indirect sunlight.
  5. Feeding to Your Chooks:Continue rinsing and draining twice daily. By Day 7, the sprouts should reach 10-20cm in height and form clumps of grass.
  6. Pull apart small sections of the sprouted greens and offer them to your chickens. Any uneaten sprouts can be left in the tray to continue growing or composted.

All your questions answered

When is the best time to sow Nesty Boxes Poultry Meat Bird Production Seeds Mix?

If irrigating, the blend can be sown at any time of the year. Where water may be limited, sow directly into the ground during autumn. This timing allows the blend to establish well, with most forage becoming available throughout the winter months. In well-managed pastures, and if allowed to reseed in spring, parts of the blend may persist and regenerate in future seasons.

Applying fertiliser at sowing will further support plant health and productivity.
For sprouting, the mix can be grown year-round. Warmer months may require increased watering, but growth rates will typically be faster compared to cooler conditions.

How do I know when my seed blend is ready for my hens to eat?

The blend should be approximately 15cm to 20cm in height, with an established root system. Test by tugging on a plant; if it uproots, the sown vegetation is not ready for your hens. Once you can tug on a plant and not have it uproot, it will be ready for its first grazing. Monitor carefully to ensure you do not “overgraze.” If you are sprouting this blend, it should be ready for consumption after 7 days. Sprouting this blend will mean it is unlikely to regrow back.

How do I best manage my plants so they regrow back?

The trick is to not “overgraze.” Ensure that the plants don’t get too trampled or eaten right down to the base. Shorter periods on your forage will enhance the lifespan of the blend. Watering is strongly encouraged to keep the plants fresh, lush, and palatable. Please note that not all the varieties within the seed blend are designed to grow back and therefore may only last one or two grazings. The application of fertiliser and monitoring soil health will also improve the production and quality of the forage grown. If sprouting this blend, expect the mix to be ready for consumption in 7 days but it is unlikely to regrow back.

What size area will a 950g packet grow?

A 950g packet of the Nesty Poultry Layer Bird Production Seeds Mix is suited for 10m2. You can sow the blend more heavily for a lusher plantation. Sowing lighter than this recommendation will increase the possibility of weeds and is advised not to do so. For best results, sow the blend 10 to 20mm below the surface and water immediately. Aim to water once a day for at least 1 week post sowing. Fertiliser is recommended but not essential. In sprouting situations, expect to use at least half the packet in a 35cm tray.
