Fibre drives natural chewing, which helps wear teeth and keep mouths working properly, turning your forage into a daily health habit, not just a feed.

HOW TO SOW:
Step 1: Lightly rake the soil surface to loosen the top layer. Use 10- 25 g per m², increasing the rate for a denser stand.
Step 2: Spread seed evenly, aiming for a sowing depth of 10 mm.
Step 3: Lightly cover seed with soil using a rake or shovel.
Step 4: Water well and allow 8 to 12 weeks for establishment, depending on conditions.
Step 5: Apply fertiliser in week two after sowing to encourage growth. Maintain 30 to 50 mm height to support regrowth.
Note: Remember to keep your furry friends off the planted area until it is ready for them to consume. Water regularly for best establishment.

This product is best grown in trays or soil beds to produce a low sugar, high fibre forage that can help reduce reliance on purchased hay.
For tray growing, Nesty Boxes recommends using two shallow trays. Drill drainage holes in the top tray, fill with soil, then place it into a second tray to catch excess water. Sow seed approximately 10 mm below the surface and keep soil consistently moist during establishment.
Allow plants to reach 15 to 20 cm before grazing and always leave at least 5 cm to encourage strong regrowth. Apply fertiliser after establishment and position trays in a bright area out of direct, harsh sunlight for best results. This blend is formulated by agronomists and animal nutritionists using certified seed to support quality forage production for small animals.
For best long-term results, growing in soil is recommended. While sprouting methods can be used, they provide a one-time feed option only and do not deliver ongoing forage. Under well managed systems, tray growing can provide months of fresh forage, while soil beds can supply years of productive growth.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is growing timothy grass cheaper than buying timothy hay?
Yes, significantly. Timothy hay commonly costs $30 to $40 per kilo for rabbits and guinea pigs. One 950 g pack of Nesty Boxes Timothy Grass Seed can grow the equivalent of around 30 to 40 kg of timothy hay over time under good conditions. That means instead of spending $900 to $1,600 on hay, you’re investing $79.95 once to grow your own fresh, low sugar forage at home.
How long does timothy grass take to grow?
Timothy grass is ready for its first light graze in around 8 to 12 weeks, depending on temperature, sunlight, and watering. After that, it regrows quickly and can be grazed again every 2 to 4 weeks.
Can I grow timothy grass in soil or trays?
Both work well. In the ground or garden beds: best for long term grazing and higher yields. In trays or pots: perfect for balconies, patios, or controlled feeding. Use good quality soil, keep it moist during establishment, and place in full sun or bright light.
How long will timothy grass last once it’s grown?
With regular trimming or grazing and basic fertiliser (such as the Nesty Pasture pH or Nesty Soil Fusion), timothy grass can stay productive for many months, and in mild climates it can persist for over a year. Leaving a small amount of growth behind each time helps it regrow faster.
How many grazings can I get from one tray or 1 m²?
Once established: A tray can usually be grazed 2 to 4 times before needing re-sowing. 1 m² of timothy grass can provide multiple grazings across the season, often 10 or more light grazes per year under good car
Is timothy grass safe for other animals?
Yes. Timothy grass is safe for: Rabbits Guinea pigs Tortoises Chinchillas Other small herbivores It is also safe for poultry and larger livestock, although it is especially valued for small animals because of its gentle fibre profile.
What makes fresh timothy grass better than hay?
Both are excellent, but fresh timothy grass offers a few extra benefits: Naturally low in sugar and starch, just like timothy hay Higher palatability, so fussy eaters are more likely to nibble Extra hydration from fresh greens Less dust, which is better for sensitive airways You control the quality, not storage or shipping conditions Hay is still important for constant fibre access, but fresh timothy is the perfect daily supplement.
Will fresh timothy replace hay completely?
No. Fresh timothy grass is best used alongside hay, not instead of it. Some hay should always be available for dental wear and fibre consistency, while fresh grass adds variety, hydration and enrichment. However it will reduce your hay requirement significantly.
How long will the seeds last before planting?
When stored in a cool, dry place, timothy grass seed will remain viable for 12 to 24 months.
How much seed do I need?
Your sowing guide uses 10- 25 g per m² for thick, fast coverage. That means: 20- 50 g covers 2 m² 950 g covers 38-76m² Perfect for anything from a few trays to a dedicated forage patch.
