How to Grow Nesty Seeds in Trays
For a continuous supply of fresh greens, we recommend using two seedling trays on rotation.
Prepare the tray – Drill small holes in the base of one tray to allow proper drainage.
Fill and sow – Add quality soil, evenly sow the seed mix, and lightly water.
Establish growth – Place the tray in a sunny spot and keep moist until the greens establish.
Feeding time – Once the greens are ready, bring the tray to your chicken coops to let them enjoy the fresh greens.
Protect the roots – To prevent digging, cover the tray with mesh so your chickens can graze the tops without disturbing the soil.
Rotate trays – After grazing, set the used tray aside to recover (continue watering and giving light) while you bring in the second tray.
With proper care and rotation, your Nesty seed mixes can provide up to five years of fresh, nutritious greens.
How to Sprout Nesty Seeds (Soil-Free)
Sprouting seeds is an easy way to give your pets fresh, nutritious greens without using soil. Follow this simple process:
Day 1 - Soak in a jar: Place the seeds in a clean jar, cover with water, and soak for 6–12 hours. Drain thoroughly.
Day 2 - Transfer to a tray: Move the soaked seeds into a shallow tray with drainage holes. Spread them evenly across the base.
Daily care: Water lightly each day, ensuring the tray drains well so the seeds stay moist but not waterlogged.
Sprouting: Within 5-7 days, the seeds will sprout into fresh greens ready to feed.
This soil-free method is fast, clean, and ensures a reliable source of fresh sprouts chickens. This will work best with the Nesty Boxes All Seasons Seeds. It is recommended to sow seed in soil for long term results.

How do I know when my seed blend is ready to eat?
It is recommended to sow all the Nesty Sowing Seeds range in soil. If sowing the crop, the blend should be ready once it reaches 15 to 20cm in height with an established root system. Test by tugging a plant; if it uproots, the sown vegetation is not ready. Once you can tug on a plant and not have it uproot, it will be ready for its first grazing. Monitor carefully to ensure you do not over graze. If sprouting the crop, the blend should be ready in a minimum of 21 days. This is dependent on the growing conditions provided and could be ready sooner or later too. Allow for the blend to grow to 7cm to 20cm before harvesting. Once the legume blend reaches a desirable height, gently pull apart clumps and feed. Any leftovers may continue to grow or best composted.
How do I best manage my plants so they regrow back?
If sowing directly into soil: The key is to not “overgraze.” Ensure that the plants don’t get too trampled or eaten right down to the base. Shorter periods on the vegetation will enhance the lifespan of the blend. Watering is strongly encouraged to keep the plants fresh, lush, and palatable. If managed correctly with adequate water, nutrients and grazing management, the blend should last you months, if not years! If sprouting this blend, it will only last for 1 to 2 grazings before needing to be composted or thrown out.
Will this blend last all year round?
If sown in soil and given enough light, fertiliser, and water, this blend will be a long lasting option that has the potential to last multiple years if not overgrazed and correctly managed. If sprouted, this blend is only good for consumption once or twice before needing to be composted.
When is the best time to sow or sprout?
If you are thinking of sprouting this blend, we suggest trying the Nesty All Seasons Sowing Seeds instead. This blend contains a high percentage of cereals which will germinate quickly and make for a great sprouting blend. Most of our other blends are designed to be sown in soil. This can be in trays, planter boxes or directly in the ground. The optimum time to sow is when the temperature is warm but the soil is moist.
I have planted some of these seeds for my chooks so they can have a treat. They just have to be patient 🐔. I think it’s great that there is so much variety and I plenty to re grow in different areas to keep them interested
